Airport Update: What You Need To Know About Trusted Traveler Programs

If you have upcoming travel, especially international travel, there are a few temporary changes you should be aware of regarding Global Entry and TSA PreCheck.

Due to the ongoing partial government shutdown, the U.S. Department of Homeland Security has announced operational adjustments that may impact some Trusted Traveler Programs.

Here is what that means for you.

What Is Currently Affected

Global Entry
Global Entry services are temporarily suspended while the shutdown remains in effect. If you are returning to the United States, you will not be able to use Global Entry kiosks and should plan to go through standard customs processing.

TSA PreCheck
TSA PreCheck remains operational at U.S. airports at this time. However, availability may vary by airport depending on staffing levels. In some locations, PreCheck lanes could be limited or adjusted.

What Travelers Should Expect

During this period, TSA and Customs and Border Protection are prioritizing the general traveling public. That said, travelers may experience:

• Longer wait times at airport security checkpoints
• Longer processing times at U.S. ports of entry
• Inconsistent availability of PreCheck lanes

This is an operational adjustment, not a security threat. Your safety remains the priority.

How To Plan Ahead

If you have travel coming up, here are my recommendations:

• Arrive earlier than you normally would
• Plan additional time for customs if returning from an international trip
• Monitor official TSA and DHS updates for the most current information

Under normal circumstances, airlines recommend arriving at least two hours before a domestic flight and three hours before an international flight. During this period, I suggest building in a little extra cushion.

Because government websites may not be actively updated during the shutdown, information can change quickly. I am always happy to help you navigate updates as they happen.

If you have an upcoming trip and would like to review your airport strategy, let’s chat. Helping you ditch the DIY and travel like a VIP includes keeping you informed when things shift.

Safe travels,
Alison
